How to Know if You Have a Loose Vagina

There is no such thing as a loose vagina. A vagina is a very elastic organ that can go back to its original shape after penetration, and any amount of sex will not make your vagina loose. However, the vagina undergoes changes as you progress through puberty, sexual maturity, adulthood, parenthood, and menopause and can become lax over time. Psychological factors associated with ageing, or meme trends that focus on sexuality can also affect your perception and how you feel about your vagina. There isn’t much research that sets an "average" for how tight a vagina should be. This is likely due to the fact that it is an internal muscle that contracts and expands when needed, such as during intercourse or childbirth.

Symptoms like urine leakage when coughing, sneezing, or laughing, failing to reach the toilet in time, passing gas from either the anus or vagina when bending over or lifting things, decrease in sexual pleasure due to reduction in vaginal sensation, tampons dislodging or falling out or sensation of heaviness in the vagina are signs of loose vaginal muscles. Most women who describe this "looseness" refer to the fact that they do not feel as tight as they used to, rather than a problem that was always present.

The vaginal walls are made up of collagen and fibrous material, which provide strength and flexibility. But, when a woman has had multiple vaginal deliveries, the stress of childbirth can reduce the sensitivity as well as the tightness of the area, which gets stretched throughout labor. A few other causes include:

  • Age- With growing age, the body's muscles too, grow more relaxed in general, thus, contributing to loosened vaginal walls

  • Menopause- Estrogen levels diminish after menopause. Thus, more than half of the women worldwide report severe vaginal laxity post this stage.

  • An injury to the vaginal area- An injury, an accident, or sexual abuse, too, can lead to vaginal laxity.

  • Collagen metabolism- types of genetic diseases.

Thereby, laxity is both normal as well as common. But, if you’re experiencing discomfort, pain, pressure, fullness, or have an impression that something is 'falling out.', it is essential you seek medical help. Otherwise, these symptoms can get severe over time and lead to more extensive problems like urine incontinence (urinary leakage) and pelvic organ prolapse.

How to check if your vagina is loose?

It is vital to understand that there's no one method or test for determining vaginal laxity. Instead, the doctor makes the diagnosis based on the patient's medical history and her physical examination and then recommends treatment. However, if you want to do a self-diagnosis, here are a few tests that you can do by yourself at home:

  • The finger check- To do the finger check test, insert your index finger into the vaginal opening and see whether you can feel anything. Then, instead of using one finger, use two (index and middle) to assess the tightness. If you can slide three fingers in (middle, index, and ring finger together) and don't feel much, your vaginal muscles are probably stretched, and that may be making you feel a little loosened.

  • Ben Wa ball test- You can do the Ben Wa ball test by holding the ball with your vagina. The longer you can hold it, the better. A tight vagina can hold the ball even while squatting. If you can stand with your legs wide apart without the ball falling out, your vaginal tone is good. But, if the ball falls out when standing with your legs closed, the vagina is slack or loose.

What can you do to tighten your vagina?

Kegel Exercises- Kegel exercises are the most efficient way to increase vaginal elasticity. These are the most basic clench-and-release exercises. To begin, look for your pelvic floor muscles by stopping the flow of pee. After you’ve located your muscles, do not do this exercise while urinating as it is bad for your bladder. After that, take a comfortable seat and squeeze your pelvic floor muscles. But, avoid holding your breath and squeezing your stomach, bottom, or thigh muscles simultaneously. A bonus tip- completing pelvic floor exercises while doing everyday chores like brushing your teeth is a simple way to include them in your routine!

Surgical ways to tighten your vagina

  • Laser vaginal treatment- Laser Vaginal tightening refers to a non-invasive procedure used to tighten loose vaginal muscles. Here, a laser probe is inserted through the speculum, which emits heat radiation that penetrates the outer layer of the vaginal tissue to the deeper layers. The heat causes the vaginal tissue to produce more collagen. The new collagen tightens the skin and improves the natural lubrication of your vaginal canal.

  • Vaginoplasty- Any surgical operation that results in the building or reconstruction of the vagina is known as vaginoplasty. It's a form of genitoplasty procedure. It can be used to reverse major laxity that develops in women who have had multiple normal deliveries and older women due to ageing. It's also used for congenital conditions, tumors, or trauma, as well as other pelvic floor muscle problems, including vaginal prolapse.
