Medical abortion is a method of terminating a pregnancy through the use of drugs. This type of abortion does not require surgery or anesthesia and can be performed in a doctor's office or at home, with follow-up visits to your doctor. It is safe and effective during the first trimester of pregnancy when done correctly under the care of an experienced gynecologist at the right time.

Medical abortion is a big decision that affects your emotional and psychological well-being. If you're thinking about getting this surgery, make sure you know what it entails, as well as the risks and alternatives associated with this type of treatment.

Medical abortions are performed for a variety of reasons. It can be done for completing an early miscarriage or terminating an undesirable pregnancy. If you have a medical condition that makes continuing a pregnancy life-threatening, you can also choose to have a medical abortion if you are still in your first trimester.

How is it done?

It takes at least two trips to a doctor's office or clinic for a medical abortion. Giving the medicine and then confirming that the pregnancy has been terminated are both parts of the procedure. In some cases, more than two visits are required.

  • Day 1 — Visit the office for an examination and counseling. In the form of 200 milligrams (1 tablet), Mifepristone will be given to you, and you will be instructed on how to take it.

  • Day 2, 3, or 4 — Place four misoprostol tablets, or 800 micrograms, in your vagina at home. You will be provided with information on how to do this.

  • Day 7 to 14 — You will return to the office at some point during this time to ensure that the abortion is complete. More follow-up visits may be required if the abortion is incomplete.

Who shouldn’t consider medical abortion

  • You've reached the end of your pregnancy. If you've been pregnant for more than nine weeks, you shouldn't try to have a medical abortion. This is because some methods of medical abortion are not performed after seven weeks.

  • Have a contraceptive device implanted in your uterus (IUD).

  • Have discovered that the pregnancy is outside of your uterus (ectopic pregnancy).

  • Certain medical conditions exist. All examples are bleeding disorders, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrollable seizure disorder.

  • If you take blood thinners or steroid for diabetes.

  • You cannot return to your doctor for follow-up appointments or do not have access to emergency treatment.

Risks related to medical abortion

Serious problems are extremely uncommon, although they do occur. These are some of them:

  • The abortion drugs are ineffective, and the pregnancy continues.

  • Some pregnancy tissue is still present in your uterus.

  • Your uterus has blood clots.

  • Too much or too long bleeding

  • infection

  • One of the drugs caused an adverse reaction in me.

These aren't common issues. And if they do occur, they are largely treatable with medication or other treatments.

Some problems can be exceedingly serious or even life-threatening in extremely rare circumstances.
